Gilman and The Boys Latin School of Maryland lead their respective Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association boys’ volleyball conferences. Gilman is 9-1 overall and 4-1 in league play in the A Conference, while The Boys Latin School of Maryland is 7-2-1 overall and 5-0 in B Conference play.
Gilman Maintains A Conference Lead
Gilman’s only A Conference loss came in a 3-2 match against Archbishop Spalding. The Greyhounds responded last week by defeating Archbishop Curley, 3-0, and Loyola Blakefield, 3-1.
Gilman holds a one-game lead over Mount St. Joseph, which is 8-2 overall and 3-2 in league play. The teams were scheduled to meet Wednesday with first place on the line after Mount St. Joseph earned wins over St. Paul’s, Friends and Landon.
“So far, we’ve had a season full of growth, and we hope to continue improving and developing as a team through the end of the season,” Gilman coach Diego Matorras said.
“The league has been very competitive, and every team seems to be playing at a high level,” Matorras said. “I believe anybody can beat anybody on any given day, which is why we continue to focus on our own growth, getting better every day, and finding ways to improve as a team.”
Archbishop Spalding Relies on Bryce Rothe
Archbishop Spalding is 8-3 overall and 3-3 in league play. After defeating Gilman, the Cavaliers completed the week with wins over Friends and Archbishop Curley.
Archbishop Spalding has a nine-player roster and runs its offense through outside hitter Bryce Rothe, who leads the team with 217 kills this fall. Nathan Fellows has 98 kills, while Rothe and Roman Cleven lead the defense with 90 digs each. Aidan Sheldon has 60 digs.
“It’s a challenge when you have such a small roster,” Spalding coach Kyle Church said. “When we’re healthy – and we show up – we can be pretty good.”
The Boys Latin School of Maryland Leads B Conference
The Boys Latin School of Maryland is 7-2-1 overall and 5-0 in B Conference play. The defending B Conference champion defeated Calvert Hall and Archbishop Curley without dropping a set, while losing only one set to John Carroll in the previous week’s action.
The Boys Latin School of Maryland also defeated Loyola Blakefield, 3-1. Mount St. Joseph was scheduled to challenge The Boys Latin School of Maryland the day after its matchup with Gilman.
“The season is going well, the boys are set on their goal of trying to go back-to-back,” Boys’ Latin coach Avery Engel said. “Players have adapted to different roles and, as a team, have really stepped up in working together towards their mutual goal.”
