Georgetown Basketball Schedules Home-and-Home with SMU

The Georgetown Hoyas have agreed to a home-and-home series with the Southern Methodist University Mustangs in Men’s Basketball beginning this season. The Mustangs will visit Georgetown in D.C. on December 15, 2018, and the Hoyas will travel down to Dallas at some point in the 2019-2020 season.

SMU is an exciting non-conference opponent for the Hoyas, who were often ridiculed for their easy out-of-conference schedule last season. SMU won the American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles in the 2017 season, reaching the NCAA Tournament as a six seed, but had a down year last season due to injury and player loss to the NBA. The Mustangs have five wins over AP Top 15 teams in the last two seasons combined.

Patrick Ewing led the Hoyas to a 15-15 overall record last season in his first year as head coach. This included a 10-1 out-of-conference record, with the only loss in non-conference play coming at home against Syracuse. The Hoyas had KenPom’s worst ranked strength of schedule out-of-conference.

SMU and Georgetown have only played each other once before. That game occurred in the 1984 NCAA Tournament, where Georgetown defeated SMU 37-36. The Hoyas would go on to win the national championship that season.

The game time and television channel for this matchup has yet to be announced.
