Frostburg State University Women’s Soccer Opens 2026 Season With 4-0 Win Over Lake Erie

Frostburg State University Women’s Soccer Opens 2026 Season With 4-0 Win Over Lake Erie

Frostburg State University women’s soccer team opened its 2026 season on Aug. 29 with a decisive 4-0 shutout victory at home against Lake Erie. The Bobcats improved to 1-0, while Lake Erie dropped to 0-1-1. Rayiah Davis, Chelsea Pettyjohn, Reese Rizzo and Mia Hudson scored for Frostburg State.

Frostburg State Builds First-Half Lead

Frostburg State took a 1-0 lead when junior Cassidy Paige kept the ball in play near the corner flag and played it back to junior Madison Hobson. Hobson found Davis, who headed the ball toward the goal; it tipped off Lake Erie goalkeeper Morgan Vanmeter and went into the net.

Lake Erie nearly responded when Kristeena Erras drove into the box, but junior goalkeeper Kayla Doty stopped the one-on-one chance. Doty also saved a long-distance attempt later in the half to preserve Frostburg State’s lead.

The Bobcats doubled their advantage just past the 35-minute mark. Sophomore Abbey Robrecht sent a cross from the right wing to senior Chelsea Pettyjohn, who headed the ball past Vanmeter for Robrecht’s first collegiate assist.

With less than five minutes remaining in the half, Frostburg State added another goal. Freshman Kelly Dougherty lofted the ball into the box after Lake Erie failed to clear, and sophomore Reese Rizzo reacted first after the ball bounced off the crossbar and scored Frostburg State’s third goal. The assist marked Dougherty’s first collegiate assist.

Frostburg State Preserves Shutout

In the second half, Frostburg State continued creating chances. Junior Ana Davis sent a shot just over the bar from a corner, while junior Mollie Rebuck and Paige also put efforts toward Vanmeter.

Lake Erie produced another threat with just under 15 minutes remaining, but senior goalkeeper Mia Graff made two saves to preserve the shutout. Graff dove to her left during a scramble after a free kick before catching a curling effort from Ava Moore.

Hudson completed the scoring with just under seven minutes remaining. She found space eight yards from goal and sent a left-footed shot into the bottom-right corner for her first collegiate goal.

Frostburg State finished with a 15-7 advantage in shots and a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. Vanmeter made saves on attempts by Pettyjohn, Paige, Hudson and Rebuck, among other Frostburg State chances.
