Frostburg State University Women’s Soccer Draws West Virginia State, 1-1

Frostburg State University women’s soccer battled to a 1-1 draw with West Virginia State on Wednesday evening in Frostburg, Maryland. Mollie Rebuck scored Frostburg State’s opening goal at the 10-minute mark, but Rachel Okoro equalized for West Virginia State on a penalty kick.

Mollie Rebuck Puts Frostburg State Ahead

Frostburg State created early pressure down the left side. Chelsea Pettyjohn sent one shot wide and had another attempt deflected toward West Virginia State goalkeeper Celina Seggelmann before Rebuck gathered the ball on the right wing and finished past Seggelmann to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.

West Virginia State threatened to respond, but Frostburg State goalkeeper Mia Graff made several key saves. Graff made a sliding stop on a chance from Okoro just before halftime to preserve Frostburg State’s lead.

Rachel Okoro Converts Equalizing Penalty Kick

Neither team generated much in the opening 15 minutes of the second half before Frostburg State produced chances from Mia Hudson, Rebuck, Ainsley Wilson and Madison Hinton. Seggelmann made saves on attempts from Rebuck and Wilson as Frostburg State pushed for a second goal.

With about 15 minutes remaining, West Virginia State earned a penalty kick after a tackle inside the box resulted in a foul. Okoro converted the attempt to the right of Graff, tying the match at 1-1.

Both teams continued to search for a winner. Kelly Dougherty created a chance on a counterattack for Frostburg State, while West Virginia State pressured through Leila Karam and Sara Paris Filter. Cassidy Paige headed a late cross from Pettyjohn, but the attempt missed the target.

Frostburg State Moves to 8-2-2

Frostburg State held a 13-11 advantage in shots, with both teams putting five shots on target. The draw moved Frostburg State to 8-2-2 on the season, while West Virginia State improved to 4-3-5.

The Frostburg State women’s soccer team is scheduled to visit Shawnee State on Saturday, October 10, at noon.
