Frostburg State University women’s field hockey fell to No. 9 Lander, 4-3, in overtime Friday at home in Frostburg, Maryland. Lander erased a 3-2 deficit in the fourth quarter before Ollie Bond scored the overtime winner.
The loss dropped Frostburg State to 2-2, while Lander improved to 1-1. Frostburg State led 2-0 at halftime and remained ahead after three quarters, but Sam Van Der Poel tied the game in the fourth quarter before Bonds deciding goal.
Frostburg State Builds Halftime Lead
Frostburg State created early chances, including shots from Izzy Gibbons and Rachel Young that Lander goalkeeper Avery Tworkoski saved. Frostburg State goalkeeper Jenna Yazzetti also made an early save, denying Floor Mulder after a Lander penalty corner.
Frostburg State opened the scoring early in the second quarter when Mikyla Rineer passed ahead to Sofia Boyle, who scored for a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Caroline Earnshaw found Rineer on a counterattack for Frostburg States second goal.
Frostburg State took the 2-0 advantage into halftime after limiting Lander to one penalty corner and no shots in the second quarter. Makenna Buffington sent a shot wide, while Rineer nearly added another goal before her attempt was cleared off the line.
No. 9 Lander Answers After Intermission
Lander cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third quarter when Shannon MacAngus scored after Yazzetti parried a shot into her path. Frostburg State restored its two-goal advantage less than a minute later, with Alayna Enoff providing the pass that led to Morgan Sparks goal.
Lander answered on a counterattack when Davyn Swindells scored at the back post to make it 3-2. Yazzetti made two more saves late in the quarter to preserve Frostburg States lead entering the fourth.
Lander controlled much of the fourth quarter and tied the game with less than two minutes remaining. Lily Ardito passed toward the back post after a penalty corner, and Sam Van Der Poel scored to send the game to overtime at 3-3.
Ollie Bond Scores Overtime Winner
Frostburg State had an early overtime opportunity when Makenna Buffington ran behind the Lander defense, but Tworkoski came out of the goal to stop the threat. Yazzetti also made an early overtime save to keep the game tied.
Five minutes into overtime, Lander earned a penalty corner. Leira Van Tilburg found Bond, who scored the winner to complete Landers comeback.
Lander finished with 12 shots on goal, compared with seven for Frostburg State. Frostburg States goals came from Boyle, Rineer and Sparks, while Yazzetti made multiple saves.
Frostburg State Hosts No. 3 Newberry Sunday
Frostburg State will remain at Bobcat Stadium on Sunday, September 13, 2026, when it hosts No. 3 Newberry at 1 p.m. The game will be Frostburg States second ranked opponent of the weekend.

Frostburg State built a 2-0 halftime lead and remained in front through three quarters against No. 9 Lander. The late equalizer and overtime winner produced a 4-3 defeat, but Frostburg State will have another opportunity against a ranked opponent when No. 3 Newberry visits Sunday.
