Frostburg State University Names Theresa Walton Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach for 2026-27

Frostburg State University has named Theresa Walton its next head women9s lacrosse coach for the 2026-27 year, the athletic department announced Sept. 2, 2026. Walton most recently served as the head coach at Division I Old Dominion University from 2023-26.

9I am incredibly honored and humbled to be named the next Head Women9s Lacrosse Coach at Frostburg State University,9 Walton said. 9I want to sincerely thank the entire search committee, Carrie Saunders, Rubin Stevenson, Nicole Lewis, and the Athletic Department for their belief in me and for making Frostburg feel like home from the moment I stepped onto campus.9

Theresa Walton brings Division I coaching experience

Walton amassed 19 wins during her tenure at Old Dominion University, including eight victories in 2024. Those eight wins represented the program9s most in a season since 2017.

Before joining Old Dominion, Walton served as the first-ever head coach at Division I Youngstown State from 2021-22. Youngstown State won two games in its inaugural season under Walton before finishing 10-8 in her second year, when the Penguins shared the Mid-American Conference Championship and Walton earned Coach of the Year honors.

Walton previously served as an assistant coach at Division I VCU, Division II Mount Olive and Division III Alma, primarily working with defensive units.

Walton9s playing career at Canisius College

A native of Syracuse, New York, Walton earned a bachelor9s degree in communications from Division I Canisius College. She helped the Griffins win back-to-back Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women9s lacrosse titles, including the first title in school history.

Walton earned MAAC All-Tournament honors during Canisius College9s first title run. She recorded 42 goals and eight assists for 50 career points.

Frostburg State University women9s lacrosse moves forward

Frostburg State University women9s lacrosse competes in the Mountain East Conference. Director of Athletics Rubin Stevenson welcomed Walton to the program.

9We9re excited to welcome Theresa as our next Women9s Lacrosse Head Coach. She brings a wealth of knowledge and excitement to the program and we9re looking forward to seeing what she can bring to Frostburg,9 Stevenson said.

Walton also recognized former head coach Stephanie King for her dedication and work establishing the program9s foundation. 9She has built a strong foundation and established a standard of success that deserves tremendous respect,9 Walton said. 9We hope to continue building upon that foundation and make her proud, along with the entire Alumni base, of where this program goes next.9

Walton9s background includes 19 wins at Old Dominion University, Youngstown State9s share of a Mid-American Conference Championship and Coach of the Year honors during her second season there.
