Division I Men’s Soccer August 27th Recaps

VARIOUS LOCATIONS – Four Maryland Division I Men’s Soccer teams were in action on Monday, August 27th (including one match-up that involve two state colleges against each other).  Here are the quick recaps for each match:

MOUNT SAINT MARY’S MOUNTAINEERS vs LOYOLA (MARYLAND) GREYHOUNDS

BALTIMORE, Md. – At Ridley Athletic Complex on Monday night, 341 fans watched as Junior F Brian Saramago scored a second-half hat trick for Loyola (Maryland) and the Greyhounds (2-0-0) defeated fellow Division I rival, Mount Saint Mary’s (0-2-0), 3-1.

Two of Saramago’s goal were via penalty kicks (at the 52:43 & 64:09 marks of the second half).  He scored the first goal of the game at the 49:18 mark of the game.

Freshman M Elias Ordonez (assist from Freshman F Jonathan Fawole) scored the Mountaineers (0-2-0) at the 64:35 mark to give the Mount it’s only goal of the game.

The Greyhounds out-shot the Mountaineers 15-9 (including a 8-3 edge on shots on goal).

Each team plays again on Friday, August 31st.  Mount Saint Mary’s is home hosting Rutgers (0-2-0) (7 PM) while Loyola will travel to Philadelphia for it’s match against Villanova (2-0-0) (4 PM).

NAVY MIDSHIPMEN vs NEW JERSEY INSTITUTE of TECHNOLOGY HIGHLANDERS

HILLSIDE, N.J. – Two goals by freshmen playes helped NJIT (2-0-0) defeat Navy (0-2-0), 2-1, Monday night in front of a crowd of 309 at Kean U East Campus.

R-Shirt Freshman Rene White & Freshman D Victor Gomez (Junior M Andrew Nino had an assist on each goal) scored within six minutes of each other in the first half (the only shots on goal the Highlanders had in the game) to give the Highlanders a quick 2-0 lead against the Midshipmen.

Navy answered at the 25:07 mark in the first half, as Sophomore F Nicko West scored his first goal of the season.

Neither team would score in the second half to secure the victory for NJIT.

Next on Navy’s schedule is a home game against Air Force (1-1-0) on Friday, August 31st.  Kick-off is slated for 7 PM.

UNIVERSITY of MARYLAND BALTIMORE COUNTY RETRIEVERS vs RUTGERS SCARLET KNIGHTS

BALTIMORE, Md. – The third-highest crowd in UMBC history watched as the Retrievers (2-0-0) scored a 3-2 upset over the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers (0-2-0) Monday night at Retriever SoccerPark.

The attendance of 2,828 ranks only behind two home games last year (2,873 vs Howard and 3,766 vs Maryland).

Rutgers jumped out to a 1-0 lead behind R-Shirt Junior F Brian Hawkins’ goal (assist by Junior F Jordan Hill).

In the second half, Sophomore F Cesare Marconi (from Loano, Italy) scored two goals (at the 51:30 mark and 71:31 mark with assists from Freshman F Jackson Becher & Senior M Patrick Jean-Gilles) for the Retrievers.  UMBC would also get a “own goal” in the 67th minute for their three goals. Hill scored a goal of his own for the Scarlet Knights in the second half that pulled Rutgers to within 3-2 but couldn’t get another shot on goal after that to secure the upset victory for the Retrievers.

UMBC plays it’s third home game in a row on Friday, August 31st when they host College of Charleston (1-1-0) at 7 PM.
