Delmarva Shorebirds defeated the Hickory Crawdads 9-5 Wednesday in Hickory, North Carolina, using a four-run ninth inning to break a 5-5 tie. Jaiden Lo Re hit a bases-clearing double to give Delmarva an 8-5 lead, and Jimmy Anderson followed with an RBI double.
The victory evened the series. Delmarva entered the game with a 42-74 overall record and a 19-31 mark, while Hickory entered at 67-46 overall and 33-16.
Hickory Takes an Early Lead
Hickory scored first in the opening inning when Yolfran Castillo drove in a run with an RBI fielder’s choice. Curley Martha extended the Crawdads’ lead to 2-0 with an RBI single in the second inning.
Delmarva answered in the third inning when Eric Booth Jr. grounded out to bring home Joshua Liranzo, cutting Hickory’s lead to 2-1.
Shorebirds and Crawdads Trade Leads
Stiven Martinez tied the game in the fourth inning with a solo home run. Miguel Rodriguez then drove in two runs when an error by Kolby Branch allowed Delmarva to take a 4-2 lead.
Hickory tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Deward Tovar and Curley Martha each drove in a run, making the score 4-4.
Delmarva reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning when Jhomnardo Reyes singled and an error on the play allowed Stiven Martinez to score from first. The Shorebirds led 5-4 until the seventh inning, when Castillo tied the game with a two-out RBI single.
Jaiden Lo Re Delivers in the Ninth
With the game tied at five in the ninth inning, Jaiden Lo Re hit a bases-clearing double to put Delmarva ahead 8-5. Jimmy Anderson followed with an RBI double, giving the Shorebirds the final run in the 9-5 victory.
Jake Dykhoff earned the win after throwing 4.2 innings in relief and allowing one unearned run. Dykhoff improved to 2-1, while JD McReynolds took the loss and fell to 6-3.
Delmarva Shorebirds Seek Series Lead Thursday
The Delmarva Shorebirds will seek consecutive wins and the series lead Thursday against the Hickory Crawdads. Harrison Kreiling is scheduled to start for Delmarva against Evan Siary, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
