D.C. United win 2-1 thriller over LA Galaxy

Both D.C. United and the Los Angeles Galaxy sat at fifth place in their respective conferences entering Sunday night’s sold out match at Audi Field. In a thrilling matchup under the lights, D.C. United edged the Galaxy 2-1 to bypass both the New York Red Bulls and NYCFC for third place in the Eastern Conference. The Black and Red’s record improves to 10-7-9 with 39 points.

D.C. United was without a few key starters. Wayne Rooney was out due to an illness and Junior Moreno with a suspension. They were also without Chris Durkin and Russell Canouse.

D.C. United struck first in the 28th minute. After Quincy Amarikwa forced a turnover on the Galaxy’s end, he found Ulises Segura. Segura fed the ball to Paul Arriola, who outhustled two defenders and put it in the back of the net.

The Galaxy tied it 1-1 in the 48th minute with a goal from Favio Alvarez. After a few chances from each side, D.C. United capitalized on a second chance rebound sequence in the 73rd minute. After a shot from Ulises Segura went off the crossbar and a follow-up from Arriola was stopped by goalie David Bingham, Lucas Rodriguez was there to bang home the rebound and give D.C. United the 2-1 lead.

Both Arriola and Rodriguez’s goals were their fifth of the season. Their victory was their first win at Audi Field since June 26 in a 1-0 win over Orlando City SC. Bill Hamid made five saves in the win.

D.C. United will hit the road for a Saturday night contest at the Vancouver Whitecaps. Kickoff is at 10 p.m. eastern on FloFC.
