D.C. United scores in extra time to stun Red Bulls

D.C. United defeated the New York Red Bulls 1-0 in dramatic fashion with Erik Sorga depositing in the game-winning goal at Red Bull Arena. This win marks D.C. United’s first road win against the Red Bulls since July 9, 2011 when the Black and Red also came away with a 1-0 outcome.

The Black and Red had to make several changes to the starting lineup with a long list of injuries. Head Coach Ben Olsen stuck with his 3-5-2 formation that they’ve used since coming back from the MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando. Chris Seitz started in his second match in goal and thanks to the back three of Frederic Brillant, Donovan Pines and Joeseph Mora in front of him, the unit kept the game scoreless for United’s second clean sheet of the season.

The first half was a good effort defensively for the Black and Red. The second half was more of the same. The match headed scoreless as the game reached stoppage time and in the 98th minute Erik Sorga fired in the game-winner. It was his first goal for the Black and Red.

D.C. United will return home to Audi Field to take on New York City FC this Sunday at 7 p.m.
