D.C. United fell 3-1 to Charlotte FC at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday, Aug. 22. Forward Louis Munteanu scored his sixth goal of the season, but Charlotte FC responded with three late goals to secure the victory.
The match was scoreless at halftime, with both sides generating limited chances. D.C. United took the lead in the 55th minute when Munteanu converted a set piece from midfielder João Peglow. The assist marked Peglow’s fourth of the season, tied for a team high.
Charlotte FC responded in the 64th minute when former D.C. United defender David Schnegg scored off a set piece to equalize. Two minutes later, in the 66th minute, defender Will Cleary scored off another set piece to put Charlotte FC ahead. Pep Biel extended Charlotte’s lead in the 77th minute to make it 3-1.
Charlotte FC Takes Control in Second Half
D.C. United continued to create chances late in the match but could not complete the comeback. The club finished with 17 total shots, including five on target, and five total crosses. D.C. United also earned three consecutive corner kicks in stoppage time without finding a second goal.
Head coach René Weiler made his first substitutions in the 75th minute, bringing on Nathan Ordaz, Hosei Kijima and Nikola Markovic for Kimito Nono, Jackson Hopkins and Brandon Servania. Servania made five defensive contributions and created four chances in 75 minutes. Weiler made his final substitution in the 85th minute, sending on Jared Stroud for Peglow.
D.C. United Remains 11th in Eastern Conference
D.C. United recorded 12 tackles and registered 27 clearances while working to limit Charlotte FC’s attack. Following the loss, D.C. United sits in 11th place in the Eastern Conference with 24 points and a 5-7-9 record.
D.C. United returns to Audi Field on Saturday, Aug. 29, to face Los Angeles FC. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST.
