D.C. United and Special Olympics Unified Team defeated Houston Dynamo’s Special Olympics Unified Team, 4-2, Tuesday, July 22, at Houston Sports Park in Houston, Texas. The match opened a 48-hour trip that marked the first time D.C. United’s Unified Team traveled alongside the club’s first team.
Eleven athletes and unified partners made the trip, with Nathan Young leading D.C. United’s Unified Team. The Unified Team program brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to compete against other MLS unified teams while promoting inclusion through soccer.
D.C. United and Special Olympics Unified Team Rally After Halftime
D.C. United opened the scoring a few minutes into the match and held a 1-0 lead at halftime. Houston Dynamo’s Special Olympics Unified Team responded shortly after the break to equalize before taking the lead moments later.
D.C. United answered within minutes to level the match. The team added an insurance goal with just under 10 minutes remaining before scoring a fourth goal to seal the 4-2 victory.
Athletes from both unified teams received gold medals and pennants after the match. D.C. United’s Unified Team remained undefeated this season at the time of the announcement.
Unified Team Shares Houston Trip With D.C. United
The match began a broader Houston experience for D.C. United’s Unified Team. The trip also included an exchange event at the Dash House, participation in the player tunnel walkout, a VIP game-day experience, halftime recognition and a postmatch photo and autograph session with players and coaches.

United Foundation. “Our unified athletes had the opportunity not only to take on Houston’s Unified Team but also to experience a true road trip alongside D.C. United’s First Team. This trip showcased the club’s commitment to championing inclusion through sports and community beyond the DMV.”
Special Olympics DC hosted its annual signing day with D.C. United General Manager Erkut Sogut and defender Sean Nealis ahead of the second half of the 2026 MLS season. The event welcomed D.C. United’s Unified Team and highlighted the program’s role in creating competition and community through soccer.
Jacob Murrell Reflects on Unified Team Experience
D.C. United forward Jacob Murrell said he joined the unified athletes at a training session last year and saw the joy they shared through the sport. He also highlighted the significance of the team’s result in Houston.
“I was able to join them at a training session last year and just seeing the joy that it brings them to be together and to play the game is really cool,” said Jacob Murrell, D.C. United forward. “For them to get the result on top of it, that was awesome.”
D.C. United’s Unified Team is scheduled to host Charlotte FC’s Unified Team on Saturday, September 19, at Audi Field following the D.C. United match.
