Coppin State University women’s volleyball defeated Cleveland State, 3-1, Sept. 12 at Woodling Gym in Cleveland, Ohio, while setting a school record for hitting percentage in a four-set match. The Eagles won by set scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-18 and 25-13 to complete a 3-0 week at the Zips Invitational, earn their third consecutive victory, and improve to 4-5.
Coppin State finished with 57 kills on 120 attacks and 11 errors for a .383 hitting percentage. That mark surpassed the previous school record of .345, set against North Carolina A&T on Oct. 2, 1992.
Coppin State Women’s Volleyball Closes Match With 12-0 Run
The Eagles opened the match with an 11-2 advantage in kills and hit .409 in the first set. Cleveland State answered in the second set, but Coppin State hit .269 in the third set and .344 in the fourth to take control.
Coppin State was particularly efficient in the second set despite losing it, recording 21 kills against two errors on 40 attacks for a .475 hitting percentage. With the fourth set tied at 13-13, the Eagles scored the final 12 points to complete the four-set victory.
Cleveland State finished with a .130 hitting percentage. The result gave Coppin State its third consecutive win and completed the Eagles’ 3-0 week at the Zips Invitational.
Ivanna Luna Leads Coppin State Attack
Ivanna Luna led all players with 13 kills while hitting .455. Nia Curry added 12 kills, and Cherisse Atilano recorded 11 kills and 14 digs for her third double-double of the tournament and fourth of the season.
Kendall Minta recorded seven kills on 11 attacks without an error for a .636 hitting percentage and led Coppin State with five blocks. Rori Gray added six kills on six swings for a 1.000 hitting percentage, while Kayden Cupid had five kills, hit .500, and recorded three blocks in two sets.
Eva Rovello finished with 41 assists, three kills, three aces, nine digs and four blocks. Coco Figueroa contributed 10 assists, six digs and two aces.
Next Match for Coppin State Women’s Volleyball
Coppin State returns to action at UConn’s For the White & Blue Tournament on Sept. 18-19. The Eagles open against host UConn on Friday night before facing Rhode Island at 2:30 p.m. and Merrimack at 6:30 p.m.
On the trip back to Baltimore Sunday, Coppin State will face New Haven in a 3 p.m. start.
