Coppin State University women’s volleyball fell to Navy in four sets, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23, in the Kristen Dickmann Invitational opener September 4 at Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis, Maryland. Coppin State University women’s volleyball and Navy both entered the match with 1-3 records.
Coppin State recorded 61 kills on .231 hitting, compared with 49 kills on .230 hitting for Navy. The Eagles held advantages in aces, 8-6; assists, 58-42; and digs, 63-56, while Navy led 11-7 in blocks.
Cherisse Atilano Leads Coppin State
Cherisse Atilano led Coppin State with 15 kills, six digs, two blocks and two service aces. Kayden Cupid and Ivanna Luna each contributed 10 kills, with Cupid hitting .450 on 20 attacks and recording a team-high five blocks.
Kendall Minta added nine kills while hitting .467, and Nia Curry finished with seven kills, five digs and two service aces. Eva Rovello recorded 49 assists and 13 digs for a double-double, while Coco Figueroa posted a match-high 21 digs and two service aces. Andrea Cintron also recorded two service aces.
Navy Wins Three Close Sets
Coppin State opened the match with an 8-2 lead, but Navy rallied to tie the first set at 18-18. Navy then closed the frame on a 7-4 run to win 25-22.
The Eagles responded in the second set by hitting .361 with 18 kills and five errors. Coppin State maintained control and evened the match with a 25-21 victory.
Navy edged Coppin State in the third set after the Eagles held a 21-20 lead. The Midshipmen scored five of the final six points to take the set 25-22.
Coppin State led 20-18 in the fourth set before Navy moved ahead 24-21. A kill by Atilano and a Navy attack error pulled the Eagles within one, but Navy secured the match with a 25-23 win.
Coppin State Schedule
Coppin State will play Penn at 11 a.m. Saturday, before facing Stony Brook at 7 p.m. The two matches will complete the Kristen Dickmann Invitational.
