Coppin State University women’s volleyball extends winning streak to 12 with 3-1 win over NC Central

Coppin State University women’s volleyball defeated NC Central, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at the LeRoy Walker Complex in Durham, North Carolina, extending its winning streak to 12 matches. The Eagles won 28-26, 12-25, 25-15 and 25-20 to improve to 13-5 overall and 4-0 in MEAC play.

Coppin State University women’s volleyball gets balanced performance

Cherisse Atilano led Coppin State with 16 kills, while Kendall Minta added 10 kills, six blocks and a .529 hitting percentage. Deviana Walker contributed nine kills, Ivanna Luna had eight and Kayden Cupid finished with four.

Eva Rovello recorded 43 assists, nine digs, three aces and one kill as Coppin State hit .281 as a team. NC Central hit .233. Coco Figueroa led all players with 26 digs, and Aya Rawlins added two aces.

Coppin State responds after second-set loss

Coppin State used a 6-0 run to turn a 5-3 deficit into an 11-6 lead in the opening set. NC Central rallied to take a 24-22 advantage, but back-to-back kills from Cupid helped force extra points before Luna gave Coppin State a 26-25 lead. The Eagles closed out the set, 28-26.

NC Central raced to an early lead in the second set and won 25-12. Coppin State answered in the third set, using six straight points to build a 13-7 advantage before a later 5-0 run secured the frame and gave the Eagles a 2-1 match lead.

Coppin State opened the fourth set with a 4-0 run, but NC Central moved ahead 9-8. The Eagles responded with a 9-1 run to take a 17-10 lead and held on for the 25-20 victory.

Next matches for Coppin State

Coppin State was scheduled to host Maryland Eastern Shore on Oct. 9 before traveling to Delaware State for a 1 p.m. match Oct. 11. Both matches were scheduled to air on the MEAC Network.
