College Soccer Round-Up September 22, 2017
In a very active Friday night for college soccer teams involving state schools, here are the results:
#3 Maryland vs. #6 Michigan State at East Lansing, MI
A game that could be a preview of the B1G Ten championship, Maryland (6-0-2; 2-0-2) GK Dayne St. Clair saved six shots on goal and his Michigan State (7-0-1; 2-0-1) counter-part, GK Jimmy Hague had seven saves. The teams played to a 0-0 tie.
Maryland next plays in-state rival UMBC (5-1-1) on Thursday, September 26th at College Park
Loyola, Maryland vs. Colgate at Hamilton, NY
Barry Sharifi had a goal in the 22nd minute and TJ Walked scored his first goal of the season in the 83rd minute to lead the Loyola Greyhounds (4-2-1; 1-0-0 PL) past the Colgate Raiders (3-5-0; 0-1-0 PL) 2-1. Aram Ouligian had a goal in the 81st minute for Colgate.
Loyola’s next plays Cleveland State in Cleveland on Tuesday, September 25th.
In women’s action Friday night:
Navy vs Loyola, Maryland at Annapolis, MD
For a second game in a row, the Navy Midshipmen Women’s Soccer team (9-3-0; 2-0-0 PL) shut out it’s opponent, Loyola, Maryland (2-7-0; 0-2-0), 4-0 for the team’s fifth consecutive win. The last time Navy had a five-game winning streak was four years ago between September-October 2013.
Navy scored all four goals in the second half. Karli Sottung scored her first goal of the season in the 49th minute to give Navy it’s first goal of the night. Just a few minutes later, Ash Farrow headed the ball in the net and just three minutes later, Meghan Hagerty had her own header to give Navy the 3-0 lead. Navy finished it’s on-fire scoring offense when in the 78th minute, Eleanor Pratt scored on a penalty kick.
Navy has now outscored it’s opponents 18-2 in it’s current winning streak. They seek their sixth consecutive win on Wednesday, September 27, against American University (1-8-0; 0-1-0 PL) in Washington, DC.
Maryland vs Illinois at Champaign, IL
For 83 minutes, it was a good defensive game. But then on the 84th minute, Maryland (7-1-1; 1-1-0 B1G Ten) M/F Kate Waters scored her first goal of the season as the Terps defeated Illinois (3-8-0; 0-3-0 B1G Ten), 1-0. GK Rachel Egyed had five saves in the win. Maryland next plays Northwestern (4-4-1; 1-1-0) on Sunday at Evanston, IL.
