College Basketball Preview: UMBC (18-10, 10-3) at UAlbany (10-17, 5-7)

UMBC men’s basketball travels to New York to face the UAlbany Great Danes on Saturday afternoon at the SEFCU Arena.

The Retrievers (18-10, 10-3) played one of their best games of the season Thursday evening, defeating the Vermont Catamounts, 65-56, at the UMBC Event Center.

Junior guard K.J. Jackson led the Retrievers with 18 points and junior forward Arkel Lamar checked in with 15 points.  The Retrievers led for the majority of the game, using a stifling defense to keep the clamps on the high-powered Vermont offense, which finished 19 points below their season average.

The victory marked the ninth in their last 10 games and they have moved into sole possession of second place in the America East conference.

Graduate student forward Joe Sherburne leads UMBC in points per game, averaging 14.3 with Jackson chipping in 12.3.  Defense continues to be a focal point of the team as they allow just 64.5 points in conference games.

UAlbany (10-17, 5-7) is scoring nearly 67 points per contest and are coming off an impressive win at Stony Brook on Thursday evening, 74-70.

Redshirt freshman guard Cameron Healy leads the Great Danes in scoring, coming in at 16.6 points per game.  Junior guard Ahmad Clark (Bowie, DeMatha Catholic) checks in with a ppg average of 16.3.

The Retrievers needed a late 3-pointer by junior forward Rick Council II to down the Great Danes, 65-64, in overtime, at the UMBC Event Center on January 19th.

Tip –off tomorrow is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
