The Chesapeake Baysox lost 5-4 to the Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, Maryland, after Portland scored the final four runs. Chesapeake led 4-1 entering the seventh inning before three solo home runs and a sacrifice fly completed the Sea Dogs’ comeback.
Anthony Eyanson pitched six innings of one-run baseball against his former team and received a no-decision. The right-handed pitcher allowed four hits, walked none and struck out eight on 91 pitches, including 61 strikes.
Anthony Eyanson Delivers Another Strong Start
Eyanson made 11 appearances for Portland earlier this season before joining the Chesapeake organization. He has a 2-1 record, a 2.00 ERA, 40 strikeouts and eight walks in five starts for the Baysox.
Eyanson has struck out at least seven batters in each of his five Chesapeake outings. He faced the minimum over the final two and two-thirds innings of his start, striking out five of the final 11 batters he faced.
Chesapeake Builds an Early Lead
Anderson De Los Santos opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first inning. The Baysox added three runs in the second against Portland starter Devin Futrell.
Colin Tuft started the inning with a solo home run, his third Double-A homer in 13 games. Fernando Peguero scored on a Vance Honeycutt infield single, and Ethan Anderson followed with an RBI single that scored Griff O’Ferrall.
Honeycutt went 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored. O’Ferrall went 3-for-4 and recorded his second three-hit game of the season.
Portland Completes the Comeback
Richard Guasch entered to begin the seventh inning, and Portland cut into the lead with two solo home runs in a three-batter span. Tyler McDonough doubled and scored on Justin Gonzales’ sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, trimming Chesapeake’s advantage to 4-3.
Henry Godbout hit two home runs for Portland, including the go-ahead shot against Chesapeake left-hander Micah Ashman in the ninth inning. Max Carlson earned the win after pitching scoreless seventh and eighth innings, while Caleb Bolden completed a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season.
Baysox Threaten in the Ninth
Chesapeake had the tying run at second base and the winning run at first in the bottom of the ninth. The Baysox grounded into a game-ending double play to end the threat.
The loss left Chesapeake with a listed record of 33-26, 52-65. The Baysox were scheduled to continue their final regular-season homestand against Portland on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at Prince George’s Stadium, with JT Quinn scheduled to start against Portland left-hander Michael Sansone.
