Chesapeake Baysox Beat Harrisburg Senators 9-7 Behind Vance Honeycutt’s First Double-A Home Run

The Chesapeake Baysox defeated the Harrisburg Senators 9-7 on Friday at FNB Field in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Vance Honeycutt hit a two-run home run in the top of the 10th inning for his first Double-A home run, finishing 4-for-6 with four extra-base hits and four RBIs in the first four-hit game of his professional career.

Vance Honeycutt Powers Chesapeake Baysox Early and Late

Honeycutt doubled in the first and third innings before hitting a two-run triple in the fourth. The triple gave the Chesapeake Baysox a 3-2 lead, and the team added two more runs to take a 5-2 advantage in the four-run inning.

He came to the plate with one out in the 10th inning against Harrisburg right-hander Sandy Gaston and drove a two-run shot into the left-field seats. The home run put the Baysox ahead and marked Honeycutt’s first homer at the Double-A level.

Harrisburg Senators Rally Before Baysox Answer

The Harrisburg Senators scored three runs in the first four innings against Chesapeake starter JT Quinn. Ethan Petry hit a solo home run in the third, while Quinn finished his third Double-A start with five walks and seven strikeouts.

Harrisburg tied the game in the sixth when two walks came around to score on a two-out error. T.J. White then put the Senators ahead 7-6 with an RBI double in the seventh.

Tavian Josenberger threw out a runner from left field in the seventh before the runner crossed home, preventing another Harrisburg run. The Chesapeake Baysox tied the game in the eighth when Ethan Anderson recorded his second RBI of the night on a ground-ball single.

Frederick Bencosme walked to begin the eighth before Fernando Peguero entered as a pinch-runner and stole second base. Peguero advanced to third on a wild pitch, setting up Anderson’s tying hit with two outs.

Thomas Sosa and Micah Ashman Close Out the Win

After Honeycutt’s go-ahead home run, Anderson reached on an error with two outs in the 10th. Thomas Sosa followed with a single that scored Anderson for an insurance run.

Sosa recorded three hits, reached base five times and produced his third three-hit game of the season. Micah Ashman earned the win after pitching a scoreless ninth and working the 10th inning.

Harrisburg scored on a sacrifice fly and loaded the bases with two outs, but Ashman struck out Elijah Green to end the game with the tying and winning runs stranded. The victory improved Ashman’s record to 2-1, while Sandy Gaston took the loss and fell to 3-5.

Chesapeake Baysox Record and Schedule

The Chesapeake Baysox entered the game with a 30-24 road record and a 59-63 overall record. The Baysox are the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, while the Harrisburg Senators are the Double-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals.

The Chesapeake Baysox will continue the series at the Harrisburg Senators on Saturday, Aug. 29, at FNB Field. Pat Reilly is scheduled to start for Chesapeake against Harrisburg right-hander Yoel Tejeda Jr., with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.

Chesapeake will begin a six-game home series against the Portland Sea Dogs on Tuesday, Sept. 1. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Maryland Sports Blog Take

Vance Honeycutt provided the Chesapeake Baysox with the defining performance in a back-and-forth extra-inning win. His four extra-base hits produced the first four-hit game of his professional career, and his 10th-inning home run supplied the decisive lead.

The Baysox also overcame Harrisburg’s late rally with contributions from Ethan Anderson, Thomas Sosa and Micah Ashman. Sosa reached base five times, while Ashman protected the lead through a tense 10th inning.
