The Bowie State University women’s volleyball team opened the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up with two victories Friday in Winston-Salem, N.C. Bowie State defeated Bluefield State University 3-1 before sweeping Johnson C. Smith University 3-0, improving to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in CIAA play. This marked a strong start to the season’s first CIAA Round-Up tournament.
Bowie State University defeats Bluefield State University
Bowie State University won the first match by set scores of 25-10, 21-25, 25-20 and 26-24. The Bulldogs recorded 47 kills and held Bluefield State University to a .021 hitting percentage.
Cousins led Bowie State with 12 kills, a .455 hitting percentage, 18 points and 10 total blocks. Hale added 39 assists, 10 digs, three service aces and four block assists, while Asomani-Martin recorded 18 digs, eight kills and three service aces.
Swinton contributed 12 kills, 12 digs, three block assists and one service ace. Bowie State closed the fourth set after Bluefield State tied the score at 24, getting a kill from Anacius and a block by Johnson and Cousins before a final Bluefield State attack error secured the 26-24 victory.
Bowie State University sweeps Johnson C. Smith University
Bowie State University followed with a 3-0 victory over Johnson C. Smith University, winning 25-18, 25-21 and 25-20. The Bulldogs held a 34-21 advantage in kills, led 44-36 in digs and recorded seven service aces.
Terry finished with seven kills while hitting .462 and added two block assists. Pope recorded five kills, one service ace and two block assists, while Mil’lanni Marte contributed 11 digs, three kills and one service ace.
Loundmon and Hale each recorded 12 assists in the sweep. Bowie State hit .129 in the match, while Johnson C. Smith hit .022.
Remaining CIAA Round-Up schedule
Bowie State University was scheduled to continue the CIAA Round-Up Saturday, Oct. 3, in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Bulldogs were scheduled to face Claflin University at 9 a.m., followed by a 3 p.m. match against Livingstone College.
