The Bowie State University women’s volleyball team will host Virginia Union University Monday, Sept. 28, at 6 p.m. ET in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association match at A.C. Jordan Arena in Bowie, Maryland. The match will continue Bowie State’s three-match homestand and feature Jersey Night.
Bowie State enters the match with a 2-5 overall record and a 0-2 CIAA record. The Bulldogs most recently lost to Elizabeth City State in five sets after taking the first two sets before the Vikings won the final three, 26-24, 25-21 and 15-7.
Bowie State University women’s volleyball continues CIAA play
Abena Asomani-Martin led Bowie State with 14 kills against Elizabeth City State, while Taylor Johnson added 12 kills and four total blocks. Gabrielle Hale recorded 29 assists, Mil’lanni Marte posted 17 digs and Melisa Anacius contributed five blocks as the Bulldogs finished with 12 total blocks.
Bowie State opened the season at the Fairmont State Classic and finished 2-2. Through seven matches, the Bulldogs are averaging 9.56 kills, 8.48 assists, 1.41 service aces, 12.30 digs and 2.04 blocks per set.
Monday’s match will be Bowie State’s third consecutive home contest and the first 2026 regular-season meeting between the Bulldogs and Virginia Union. Fifth-year head coach Edric Potier leads Bowie State’s women’s volleyball team.
Virginia Union University enters after two CIAA losses
Virginia Union opened CIAA play with losses to Elizabeth City State and Shaw. The Panthers began the 2026 season 3-1 at the Black College Excellence Classic, earning wins over Benedict College, Allen University and Savannah State.
Virginia Union most recently lost 3-0 to Shaw and previously fell 3-0 at Elizabeth City State on Sept. 21. Against Elizabeth City State, Jordan Carter recorded six kills and seven digs, Alana Simmons added five kills and two blocks, and Mariana Soriano finished with 10 assists.
Simmons also recorded a career-high 16 kills against Clinton College while hitting .304 and adding 12 digs and two service aces. Carter posted a career-high 26 digs in that match.
Virginia Union was selected as a team expected to compete in the CIAA Northern Division in 2026 and entered the season as the division’s defending co-champion. Anetra Sims coaches Virginia Union, while Bowie State is led by Edric Potier.
Upcoming Bowie State University schedule
Bowie State and Virginia Union are scheduled to meet again Oct. 26 in Richmond. The Bulldogs are also scheduled to compete in their first CIAA Round-Up of the season Oct. 2-4 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Bowie State is scheduled to visit Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. The schedule provides Bowie State with another CIAA matchup after Monday’s home contest against Virginia Union.
