Bowie State University volleyball split two matches Sunday at the first CIAA Round-Up of the year in Winston-Salem, N.C. Bowie State defeated Fayetteville State 3-2 after dropping the first two sets, then lost to Winston-Salem State 3-0.
Bowie State rallies past Fayetteville State
Bowie State won the final three sets against Fayetteville State, 26-24, 25-23 and 15-13, to complete the comeback. The Bulldogs turned a 7-6 third-set deficit into a 13-8 lead during a 7-of-8 scoring run before taking the set 26-24. In the fourth set, Bowie State moved from behind 7-5 to ahead 10-8 before closing out the frame.
Johnson led Bowie State with 14 kills and 17.5 points, along with two service aces and two blocks. Hale recorded 39 assists, three aces, nine digs and three blocks, while Swinton posted a team-high 22 digs with seven kills, three aces and two blocks.
Anacius added nine kills while hitting .350 and led Bowie State with four blocks. The Bulldogs hit .171 in the match, while Fayetteville State posted a .215 hitting percentage.
Winston-Salem State wins in three sets
Winston-Salem State defeated Bowie State 25-21, 25-23 and 25-17 in the second match. Bowie State opened with four consecutive service points and later turned a 12-10 second-set deficit into a 15-13 lead, but Winston-Salem State finished with advantages in several statistical categories.
Winston-Salem State recorded 39 kills and hit .236, compared with 34 kills and a .150 hitting percentage for Bowie State. Winston-Salem State also held advantages in digs, 42-36, and total blocks, 5-3. Bowie State recorded three service aces and eight service errors.
Johnson led Bowie State with eight kills and nine points, adding five digs, three assists and one service ace. Hale finished with 22 assists, one ace and three digs, while Swinton contributed seven kills, a team-high nine digs and one block assist. Cousins added five kills and three total blocks, including two solo blocks.

Bowie State is scheduled to face Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 6 p.m. The match will be the Bulldogs’ next contest after their split at the CIAA Round-Up.
