Bowie State Bulldogs Women’s Volleyball Drops Two Matches at CIAA Round-Up

Bowie State Bulldogs women’s volleyball lost to Claflin University and Livingstone College in four-set matches on Oct. 3, 2026, during the second day of the CIAA Round-Up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The results moved Bowie State to 5-7 overall and 3-4 in CIAA play.

Bowie State Falls to Claflin University

Claflin University defeated Bowie State, 3-1, after the Bulldogs won the opening set, 25-21. Claflin answered with victories of 25-23, 25-15, and 25-19 to take the match.

Bowie State overcame an 8-6 deficit in the first set by scoring six consecutive points to take a 12-8 lead. The Bulldogs maintained the advantage late and closed the set with consecutive kills from Taylor Johnson.

Claflin pulled ahead 19-14 in the second set, but Bowie State responded with seven of the next eight points to move in front 21-20. Claflin then scored the points needed to take the set, 25-23.

The Panthers built an early lead in the third set, although Bowie State twice cut the deficit to one point, including at 16-15. Claflin finished the frame with nine consecutive points and then extended its advantage in the fourth set despite a late 4-0 Bowie State run.

Johnson led Bowie State with 12 kills, five digs, and one service ace. Gabrielle Hale recorded 20 assists, three digs, and one solo block, while Abena Asomani-Martin added nine kills, nine digs, two assists, and one service ace. Mil’lanni Marte contributed three service aces and nine digs.

Livingstone Wins Second Match

Livingstone defeated Bowie State, 3-1, in the Bulldogs’ second match. Livingstone won the first set, 25-23, before Bowie State answered with a 25-20 victory in the second set. Livingstone then took the final two sets, 25-13 and 25-21.

Bowie State finished with 57 digs and eight service aces, while Livingstone recorded 55 digs and nine aces. Livingstone held the larger advantage in attack, producing 50 kills and a .239 hitting percentage compared with 45 kills and a .135 hitting percentage for Bowie State. Livingstone also held a 10-9 edge in total blocks.

Bowie State led 14-9 in the opening set before Livingstone rallied to win. The Bulldogs responded in the second set, using kills from Abena Asomani-Martin, Gabrielle Hale, and Taylor Johnson to help secure the 25-20 victory.

Livingstone controlled the third set and then overcame a Bowie State rally in the fourth. The Bulldogs erased a 12-6 deficit to tie the final set at 14-14, but Livingstone closed the match with a 25-21 win.

Next Matches for Bowie State

Bowie State was scheduled to face Fayetteville State University and Winston-Salem State on Sunday, Oct. 4, in Raleigh, North Carolina. The matches were scheduled for 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.

The Bulldogs’ .135 hitting percentage against Livingstone trailed the opponent’s .239 mark, while the 5-7 team entered the final day of the Round-Up with two matches remaining on its schedule.
