Army-Navy Game Ball Run Tradition
Every year a group of Cadets from West Point and Midshipmen from Navy partake in one of the most unique traditions in college football. That tradition- the Army-Navy game ball run.
Started in 1982 as a way to unite the 13th company at Naval Academy, the tradition sees the company run a game ball from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland to the location of the Army-Navy game. The route typically covers over 100 miles and sees relay teams taking turns of running 10-15 miles to deliver the ball before kickoff.
This year will see the longest run yet for the Midshipmen as the game, which is most commonly played in Philadelphia, is being played in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The route this year will cover more than 450 miles as over 200 Midshipmen take part in the tradition.
The journey will travel through seven states and begin the Tuesday before the game.
