Cashner thrives, Orioles beat Astros 4-1: Recap 6/8/19

The Orioles took the field tonight looking for revenge, following their extra-inning heartbreaking loss last night.

Andrew Cashner took the mound today, and he was electrifying. Through six innings, Cashner threw arguably his best game of the year, allowing just one run off four hits. Cashner gave his team a great chance to win despite a no decision.

The first five innings were a complete pitchers duel, as both starters did not allow a run. It would be the Orioles who got on the board first in the sixth.

Renato Nunez came into the game tied for first in home runs by a DH at 15. He would take the league lead at 16 home runs, when he absolutely hammered a solo shot in the sixth inning. This monster home run gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead.

The Astros would get that run right back in the bottom of the sixth. The run was scored on a sacrifice fly, in which right fielder Anthony Santander robbed Astros batter Yuli Gurriel of a three-run homer. Santander then pulled his glove back from over the wall and threw out the runner who was retreating back to first! It was one of the most impressive double plays of this whole season! If tha is not a top ten play, I do not know what is.

The Orioles would take the 2-1 lead in the eighth when Pedro Severino hit into a fielder’s choice that got the out at second base. On the throw to first for the attempted double play, the ball got away, and Trey Mancini hustled home to score the leading run.

Now in the top of the ninth, the Orioles held a 2-1 lead but looked for some insurance. Richie Martin came up clutch again, hitting his second home run on the road trip to give the Orioles the ultimate 4-1 lead! What a big time hit by the young shortstop!

Miguel Castro stayed in for the ninth, securing his second save and the Orioles 4-1 victory in Houston.

The MSB Orioles Player of the Game is shortstop Richie Martin, who blasted the game securing two-run home run in the ninth inning. Martin also had a couple of stellar defensive plays in the game.

The Birds have a chance for an impressive series win Sunday over the Astros, with first pitch coming at 2:10 p.m. ET.
