Annapolis, Md– The Naval Academy women’s basketball team hosted Rider on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall. The Mids welcomed their home crowd with a solid 63-44 home win in non-conference action.
Navy, now 2-0 on the year has defeated an opponent from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) for the second straight game to open their 2017-18 season.
Navy came out hot on both sides of the ball in the second quarter, opened up a double-digit lead, and never looked back. It was a dominant performance from the tip to the ending buzzer . Navy never trailed after the early minutes. It was such a dominate performance Navy lead for over 37 minutes in this game.
Freshman Sophie Gatzounas lead the Mids in scoring with 20 points on 9-13 shooting and 2-3 from deep. She also shared the lead in boards with another freshman Kalia Clark grabbing 11 of them.
For Gatzounas it was her first college career double- double and a big one in prevailing the Mids to the 2-0 start. Senior guards Hannah Fenske and Taylor Dunham also contributed with nice afternoons combining for 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Next up for Navy is a home matchup this Friday the 17th against Norfolk State.A
