University of Maryland, Baltimore County UMBC Swimming & Diving earned five of the six possible America East Conference weekly awards after the Thomas Murphy Invitational. Ashley Gutshall, Eunice Cheung, Matthew So, Anders Logas and Turner Wiand received honors across the women’s and men’s categories.
Gutshall was named Women’s Swimmer of the Week, while Cheung earned Women’s Rookie of the Week honors for the second time. So received Men’s Swimmer of the Week, Logas earned Men’s Diver of the Week for the second time this season, and Wiand collected his third Men’s Rookie of the Week award.
Gutshall and Cheung Earn Women’s Honors
Gutshall won the 50 freestyle in 22.82 at the Thomas Murphy Invitational and set a meet record. She also recorded a 23.09 freestyle split in the 200 medley relay and a 22.94 split in the 200 freestyle relay.
Cheung finished second in the 100 butterfly in 55.70. She also competed in the 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle at the invitational.
UMBC Sweeps Men’s Awards
So won the 100 freestyle in 44.03 to earn Men’s Swimmer of the Week honors. He also recorded times of 20.67 in the 50 freestyle and 49.02 in the 100 butterfly.
Logas won the 3-meter dive with 311.35 points and placed second in the 1-meter dive with 290.60 points. He also was named Diver of the Meet at the Thomas Murphy Invitational.
Wiand finished sixth in the 200 backstroke in 1:51.07 and placed fifth in the 100 backstroke in 49.67. He also recorded a 21.37 finish in the 50 freestyle while earning his third Men’s Rookie of the Week award.
UMBC Swimming & Diving Hosts Mount St. Mary’s
UMBC Swimming & Diving has the following weekend off before hosting Mount St. Mary’s in a swimming-only meet. The meet is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1 p.m.
