D.C. United Captain Lucas Bartlett Set for 100th MLS Start at TQL Stadium

D.C. United defender and captain Lucas Bartlett is set to make the 100th MLS start of his career Wednesday night, Oct. 21, at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati. Bartlett will reach the milestone at age 29, with 88 of his first 100 MLS starts coming with D.C. United.

Bartlett did not make his first MLS start until age 25 and became an every-week starter at 26. His path to the milestone included three colleges, a season with MLS NEXT Pro affiliate North Texas SC and a one-year deal with St. Louis CITY SC before D.C. United acquired him ahead of the 2024 season.

Lucas Bartlett’s path to 100 MLS starts

Bartlett grew up in the Kansas City area and attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Overland Park, Kansas. He was named Kansas’ Gatorade Player of the Year and an NSCAA All-American as a senior while coming through Sporting Kansas City and Sporting Blue Valley.

His college career included Loyola Chicago, Drake University and St. John’s University. Drake named Bartlett team captain for three straight seasons, and he earned first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors in 2020-21. At St. John’s, Bartlett recorded five goals and three assists in 20 matches, earned first-team All-Big East honors and helped the team reach the NCAA Tournament.

FC Dallas selected Bartlett sixth overall in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft. He spent the 2022 season with North Texas SC, making 13 starts, before St. Louis CITY SC signed him to a one-year deal on March 8, 2023. Bartlett made his MLS debut with St. Louis CITY SC and started 12 of 14 league matches as the club won the Western Conference in its inaugural season.

Bartlett became a D.C. United captain

D.C. United acquired Bartlett and midfielder Jared Stroud, along with $300,000 in General Allocation Money, from St. Louis CITY SC on Dec. 12, 2023, in exchange for midfielder Chris Durkin. Bartlett made his D.C. United debut Feb. 24, 2024, in a 3-1 win over the New England Revolution at Audi Field.

Bartlett started 31 of 32 league appearances for D.C. United in 2024, led the club in minutes played and recorded two goals and three assists. D.C. United later extended his contract through 2027 with an option for 2028. General manager Ally Mackay described Bartlett as a center back “in the prime of his career.”

Bartlett started 29 of 30 league appearances in 2025 and recorded 195 clearances and 28 blocks. He became D.C. United’s captain after forward Christian Benteke left following the 2025 season.

Defensive production and career-best scoring

D.C. United entered the milestone match with a 7-10-12 record, 33 points and five matches remaining. Bartlett started the first 18 matches of the current season before missing an Aug. 15 trip to CF Montréal because of suspension. He also missed Saturday’s match in Orlando, which was only his second league absence of the year.

Through his first 18 matches of the season, Bartlett had recorded 135 clearances, 20 blocks and four clean sheets. By mid-September, he had recorded at least four clearances in 10 consecutive matches.

Bartlett’s four goals this season are a career high, with three coming on headers. The milestone in Cincinnati will mark the latest step in a career that took him from the Kansas City area and a multi-school college path to MLS NEXT Pro, St. Louis CITY SC and D.C. United.

Maryland Sports Blog Take

Bartlett’s 100th MLS start reflects a gradual rise rather than an immediate starting opportunity. He reached the milestone after developing through college soccer and MLS NEXT Pro, earning a regular role in MLS and becoming D.C. United’s captain.

With 88 of his first 100 MLS starts coming for D.C. United, the achievement also highlights Bartlett’s importance to the club since his 2024 arrival. His defensive production and career-best scoring season have accompanied his move into the captaincy.
