University of Maryland, Baltimore County Men’s Soccer Falls to Vermont on 87th-Minute Goal

University of Maryland, Baltimore County men’s soccer fell to Vermont, 1-0, on October 10 in Baltimore after Luis Vetter scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute. The America East Conference match remained scoreless through 86 minutes before Aleksei Carnier assisted Vetter’s deciding header.

Vermont and UMBC each recorded two shots on goal. UMBC held advantages of 10-9 in total shots and 4-1 in corner kicks, but Vermont secured the victory and improved to 8-1-3 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play. UMBC dropped to 3-6-1 overall and 0-3-0 in conference play.

Vermont Scores Late

Jackson Boonmast made a save in the seventh minute to keep the match scoreless. UMBC also had two early chances from Flynn Holdem, whose third-minute shot was blocked before another attempt was saved in the fourth minute.

Simon Vujinovic nearly put UMBC ahead in the 67th minute when he headed an Alberto Galicia corner kick toward goal. Vermont’s Lucas Herceg covered the attempt to preserve the scoreless match.

Vermont’s David Ismail appeared to score with 12:43 remaining, but officials called handling on the play. Video review upheld the decision, keeping the match tied until Vetter’s goal.

UMBC Nearly Finds an Equalizer

UMBC threatened again in the 89th minute. The ball bounded out to Holdem, whose shot struck the bottom of the woodwork and stayed out.
