Goucher College women’s volleyball fell to Moravian University, 3-0, on Oct. 10 in a Landmark Conference match in Bethlehem, Pa. Maria Basantes led Goucher with eight kills as Moravian won the sets 25-13, 25-13 and 25-14.
Moravian Takes Control Early
Moravian opened the first set with three consecutive points before Basantes put Goucher on the board with a kill. The Greyhounds then used a nine-point run to build a 12-1 lead, and Goucher could not overcome the deficit.
Caroline Carter recorded back-to-back kills during Goucher’s response, while Sofia Ortiz added a service ace. Basantes and Alex Dzhygit also contributed kills, but Moravian claimed the opening set, 25-13.
Moravian again scored the first three points of the second set. Carter answered with a service ace, and Juliana Stoneberg, Dzhygit, Basantes and Carter recorded kills as Goucher tried to remain within reach.
The Greyhounds extended their advantage and won the second set, 25-13, to take a 2-0 match lead. Goucher opened the third set with a point on a Moravian error before Stoneberg added a kill assisted by Ortiz.
Moravian responded with a five-point run and maintained control through the remainder of the set. Kanay Parham, Kelsi Hockaday and Basantes added kills for Goucher, but Moravian finished the match with a 25-14 third-set win.
Goucher College Women’s Volleyball Leaders
Basantes finished with eight kills, while Carter added six. Ortiz recorded 12 assists and two service aces, and Grace Prusmack contributed nine assists.
Parham led Goucher with two blocks. Athena Savick, Carter and Basantes each recorded seven digs.
Goucher finished with a .082 hitting percentage, two blocks, 43 digs and four aces. Moravian posted a .333 hitting percentage, three blocks, 51 digs and 11 aces.
Moravian’s leaders included Gabbie Reigner with 11 kills, Kate McBrierty with three blocks, Sam Love with 22 digs and Marielle Paniagua with four service aces.
Next Match for Goucher College Women’s Volleyball
Goucher College is scheduled to play at Catholic University of America on Tuesday, Oct. 13, in a Landmark Conference matchup. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
