Frostburg State University Women’s Soccer Defeats Shawnee State 4-0 Behind Kelly Dougherty’s Opening Goal

Frostburg State University Women’s Soccer defeated Shawnee State 4-0 on Oct. 10 in Portsmouth, Ohio, in the programs’ first-ever meeting. Kelly Dougherty scored the opening goal, and Frostburg State added three second-half goals to secure the road victory and maintain a clean sheet.

Frostburg State University Women’s Soccer Takes Halftime Lead

Frostburg State led 1-0 at halftime after Dougherty applied a high press that forced a Shawnee State mistake. She finished the chance with just over 14 minutes remaining in the first half to give the Bobcats the lead.

Mollie Rebuck created Frostburg State’s first chance when she found Mia Hudson in the box, but Shawnee State goalkeeper Harlee Brand stopped Hudson’s first-touch shot. Genesis Guereca recorded Shawnee State’s first-half attempt, sending it wide, while Frostburg State goalkeeper Mia Graff made a save at the other end.

Bobcats Add Three Second-Half Goals

Frostburg State doubled its lead 90 seconds into the second half. Madison Hinton sent the ball toward the back post, where Emma Hostetler finished the chance to make it 2-0.

Hinton later assisted Frostburg State’s third goal when she sent a pass to Rebuck while falling in the box. Rebuck finished the play for a 3-0 advantage, and Reese Rizzo added the fourth goal after reacting first to a scramble in front of the Shawnee State goal.

Frostburg State finished with a 17-4 advantage in shots and preserved the shutout. Ainsley Wilson and Hallie Stansfield each attempted a shot for the Bobcats, while Rayiah Davis recorded the final Frostburg State attempt. Madalynn Mueller had a shot for Shawnee State.

Frostburg State Improves to 9-2-2

The victory improved Frostburg State to 9-2-2 on the season, while Shawnee State fell to 1-9-2. The teams entered the match without a previous meeting.

Frostburg State will remain on the road for its next match at West Liberty on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 5:30 p.m.
