Goucher College Women’s Volleyball Falls to Wilkes University in Four Sets

Goucher College women’s volleyball lost to Wilkes University, 3-1, in a conference match Friday night in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The Gophers won the second set, 25-22, after Wilkes took the first set, 25-17, before closing the match with victories of 25-19 and 25-18.

Caroline Carter led Goucher College with nine kills and three service aces. Kanay Parham and AaShyah De Vries each recorded six kills, while Sofia Ortiz tallied 17 assists.

Wilkes University Takes First and Third Sets

Wilkes University used a five-point run to turn a 13-12 lead into an 18-12 advantage in the opening set. The Colonels held on to win 25-17 despite kills from Carter, De Vries, Juliana Stoneberg and Parham, along with a service ace from Sofia Ortiz.

Goucher Responds in Second Set

Goucher College answered in the second set after trailing 6-5. A four-point run that included a kill by Stoneberg and two service aces from Makayla Nasibi gave the Gophers a 9-6 lead, and back-to-back Wilkes errors helped Goucher close out a 25-22 victory.

Wilkes Secures Match with Fourth Set Win

The teams remained close early in the third set, but Wilkes University used another five-point run to create separation. The Colonels won the set 25-19 and carried the advantage into the fourth.

Goucher College opened the fourth set with a 2-0 lead after a kill by Parham and a service ace from Carter. The Gophers later put together a seven-point run that included service aces from Nasibi and a kill by Kenzie Everson, but Wilkes University finished the set 25-18 to secure the match.

Goucher College Statistical Leaders

Parham recorded four blocks, while De Vries and Kelsi Hockaday each added two. Athena Savick led the match with 23 digs.

Makayla Nasibi and Carter each recorded three service aces, and Grace Prusmack added two. Goucher College entered the match with an 8-10 overall record and a 0-3 conference record, while Wilkes University entered at 11-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Goucher College women’s volleyball responded to the opening-set loss by winning a tightly contested second set. Carter led the Gophers offensively, while Savick paced the match with 23 digs.

Wilkes University regained control in the third set and completed the 3-1 victory in the fourth. Goucher College was scheduled to travel to Moravian on Saturday, Oct. 10, for a conference match against the Greyhounds, with first serve scheduled for noon.
