McDaniel College Women’s Soccer Team Ties No. 17 Swarthmore 1-1, Remains Unbeaten at Home

The McDaniel College women’s soccer team remained unbeaten in five home games this season after tying No. 17 Swarthmore 1-1 in a Centennial Conference contest Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Soccer Complex in Westminster, Md. McDaniel moved to 6-2-3 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play.

McDaniel also extended its home unbeaten streak against Swarthmore to eight games dating to Oct. 12, 2013. The team has posted a 5-0-3 record during that span.

Hariette Ngwatung Scores Early for McDaniel

First-year player Hariette Ngwatung scored just over three minutes into the match to give McDaniel the lead. The goal was Ngwatung’s third of the season and marked her second straight game with a goal, following her game-winner in McDaniel’s previous Wednesday victory over Elizabethtown.

McDaniel held the 1-0 advantage through halftime. Each team recorded seven first-half shots, while McDaniel held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

Swarthmore Equalizes in Second Half

No. 17 Swarthmore tied the match in the 70th minute when Ava Gizzie converted a penalty kick. Gizzie scored her sixth goal of the season.

Swarthmore nearly took the lead in the 68th minute, but Izzy Tolosa’s shot toward an open net was blocked by a McDaniel defender. Swarthmore finished with a 15-14 edge in shots, while McDaniel led 7-6 in shots on goal. Swarthmore held a 6-5 advantage in saves, and each team committed seven fouls.

Sophomore Sierra Ruehl made four saves for McDaniel. She has allowed one goal or fewer in eight of her 11 starts this season.

McDaniel College Women’s Soccer Team Looks Ahead

Swarthmore moved to 6-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in Centennial Conference play. Swarthmore sat atop the conference standings with Dickinson, while McDaniel and Franklin & Marshall were tied for fourth.

McDaniel was scheduled to conclude its three-game home stand Wednesday against Franklin & Marshall at McDaniel, with kickoff set for 4 p.m.
