Bowie State Men’s and Women’s Cross-Country Teams Each Finish Third at HBCU Challenge

Bowie State’s men’s and women’s cross-country teams each finished third Friday at the HBCU Cross Country Challenge at Randolph Farms in Petersburg, Va. Leilani Gibson led the women’s team with a sixth-place finish in the 5K, while Sean Trader paced the men with a second-place finish in the 8K.

The Bowie State women scored 67 points, and the men totaled 61 points. The meet featured several CIAA opponents.

Bowie State Women’s Cross-Country Team Finishes Third

The Bowie State women’s team posted a combined time of 2:22:36 and averaged 28:31 per runner. Winston-Salem State won the women’s competition with 23 points, followed by Lincoln (PA) with 65 points. Virginia State finished fourth with 79 points, and Shaw totaled 109 points.

Gibson finished sixth overall in the women’s 5K in 23:45.0 and recorded Bowie State’s fourth scoring position. Emetem Bezezuh placed seventh overall in 24:06.2, while Destinie Mayo finished ninth in 25:54.9.

Skye Sargent-Thomas finished 28th overall in 33:54.1. London Simons finished 29th in 34:56.6 and rounded out Bowie State’s scoring five.

Bowie State Men’s Cross-Country Team Places Third

Bowie State’s men’s team finished third with 61 points, behind Virginia State and Lincoln (PA). Virginia State won the men’s competition with 28 points, Lincoln (PA) placed second with 54 points, and Winston-Salem State finished fourth with 80 points.

The Bulldogs posted a combined team time of 3:04:06 and averaged 36:49 per runner. Trader finished second overall in the men’s 8K in 30:37.2 and was the first Bowie State runner across the finish line.

Chase Garcia finished sixth overall in 32:05.4. Tyler Bowling placed 15th in 35:58.4, Michael Price finished 18th in 36:18.2, and Bernard Johnson finished 27th in 49:07.7 to complete the scoring five. Note: Bernard Johnson’s time appears unusually long for an 8K and is consistent with source but may require verification.

What Comes Next for Bowie State

Bowie State is scheduled to compete in the Lincoln (PA) University Challenge on Oct. 15 in Lincoln, Pa. The meet will be the Bulldogs’ next listed competition.
