University of Maryland, Baltimore County women’s soccer defeated the NJIT Highlanders 1-0 on Oct. 1 at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium in Newark, N.J., as Zoe Brossman scored the decisive goal in the first half. The America East Conference victory improved UMBC to 8-3-2 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play.
Brossman scored with just under seven minutes remaining in the opening half. Cece Price and Brooke Clagett assisted on the goal, which gave UMBC the only breakthrough of the match.
UMBC Controls the Match
UMBC finished with a 21-7 advantage in shots and held a 7-0 edge in corner kicks. The Retrievers also recorded 11 shots on goal, while NJIT managed two.
NJIT nearly opened the scoring 30 seconds into the match when Brianna Garyah had a point-blank opportunity. UMBC goalkeeper Amara Codd made the save and allowed NJIT only one additional shot on target.
Payton Schenning had two chances in the opening half, and Kristiana Kolega sent an attempt wide after receiving a cross from Schenning. Brooke Clagett also put a shot on goal before helping create the eventual winning goal.
Brossman Finishes the Winning Play
Clagett started the scoring sequence with a throw-in and sent the ball into the left corner. Price won position along the end line and passed toward Brossman near the five-yard line.
Brossman finished with a low shot that NJIT goalkeeper Penelope Krieger could only partially stop. The ball crossed the line to give UMBC a 1-0 lead that held through the remainder of the match.
“Earning three points on the road in conference play is never easy, and I’m incredibly proud of our group tonight,” said UMBC head coach Rick Stainton. “We showed tremendous grit, competed for one another, and adapted when the game demanded it. Finding a way to earn a result like this says a lot about this team’s growth and character. We’ll enjoy this one, keep working, and continue forging forward together.”
UMBC Returns Home
The victory snapped UMBC’s three-game losing streak against the NJIT Highlanders. NJIT fell to 4-6-1 overall and 1-2 in America East play.
UMBC will host UAlbany on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park.
