The Howard Community College Dragons women’s volleyball team defeated the Hagerstown Community College Hawks 3-2 on Sept. 29 at the Kahlert Foundation Complex in Columbia, Maryland. Zyon Austin led Howard with 18 kills and 24 digs as the Dragons improved to 10-3 on the season.
The Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference teams split the first four sets before the Dragons won the deciding set 16-14. Hagerstown entered the match with an 8-2 record, while Howard stood at 10-3.
Howard Community College Women’s Volleyball Takes Three Sets
Howard won the opening set 25-19 thanks to aggressive attacks from Austin and key blocks by Amelia Thomas. Hagerstown responded with a 25-17 victory in the second set. The Dragons then claimed a tightly contested third set 28-26 before Hagerstown forced a deciding set with a 25-19 win in the fourth.
In the fifth set, Hagerstown held a 13-10 lead before Howard began a comeback. Toriana Curry started the rally with a kill, and Austin followed with another. Addison Zeigler gave Hagerstown match point with her 25th kill, but back-to-back errors put Howard ahead 15-14. Curry finished the match with a block against Eden Shupp, sealing the victory for the Dragons.
Howard Community College Statistical Leaders
Austin paced Howard with 18 kills and 24 digs. Thomas added 10 kills and eight blocks, while Yusra Arenas recorded seven kills, two blocks and 10 digs.
Diana Feria finished with six kills and eight digs. Curry contributed four kills, four aces, three blocks and nine digs, while Kira King posted 28 digs and two aces.
Abigail Nirola recorded a career-high 43 assists and added nine digs. Both teams had 47 kills, but Howard held advantages in aces, 7-5, and blocks, 11-3. Howard finished with a .044 hitting percentage compared with .038 for Hagerstown.
Next Match
The Howard Community College Dragons will face Patrick Henry College on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m. The match follows Howard’s five-set victory over Hagerstown.
