University of Maryland, Baltimore County men’s soccer lost to UMass Lowell, 3-2, on Sept. 26, 2026, at Retriever Soccer Park. UMBC held a 1-0 lead until the 58th minute, when the UMass Lowell River Hawks scored three goals in a 3:11 span to earn an America East victory on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
UMBC Scores Early
UMBC took the lead four minutes into the match when Nico Banks headed in a corner kick from Alberto Galicia. The Retrievers continued to create chances in the opening half, but UMass Lowell goalkeeper Moritz Aé denied two shots from Abdi Bahur and an attempt from Galicia.
UMBC goalkeeper Joe Pollard made one first-half save. Adamo Pantaleo also nearly doubled the Retrievers’ advantage before the UMass Lowell scoring run, but Aé stopped his attempt from outside the penalty area.
UMass Lowell Scores Three in 3:11
Alex Champagne tied the match in the 58th minute, scoring the first of three UMass Lowell goals in 3:11. Santiago Somorrostro followed, and Justin Goodbout-Garon completed the River Hawks’ three-goal surge.
Fredrik Moen assisted goals by Champagne and Goodbout-Garon, while Linus Musielak and Sho Kinjo assisted Somorrostro’s goal. This scoring sequence erased UMBC’s lead and put UMass Lowell in front.
UMBC Adds Late Goal
UMBC cut the deficit in the 86th minute when Flynn Holdem scored on an assist from Galicia. The assist was Galicia’s second of the match and gave the Retrievers a chance to equalize late.
Holdem missed wide in the closing moments, and Aé turned away a late shot from Jonas Nistad. Aé finished with nine saves for UMass Lowell.
UMBC Leads Statistical Categories
UMBC held advantages of 22-7 in shots and 6-3 in corner kicks. Despite those statistical edges, the Retrievers could not overcome UMass Lowell’s second-half scoring burst.
UMBC is scheduled to return to action Friday evening in Rhode Island against Bryant at 7 p.m.
