Frostburg State University Women’s Soccer fell 1-0 to Point Park on Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh, Pa., after Rebecca Pihlgren scored the winning goal with less than two minutes remaining. The loss left Frostburg State at 4-2-1, while Point Park improved to 4-3-0.
Point Park Scores Late
Frostburg State nearly took the lead within the first four minutes when senior Madison Hinton headed a corner toward goal. A Point Park defender cleared the attempt off the line, and neither team scored before halftime.
Point Park created an opportunity before the break, but junior Cassidy Paige had a shot saved by Nicole Kuchinski. Junior Elena Fernandez also had an effort blocked from just outside the box as the teams entered halftime scoreless.
Frostburg State continued to generate chances after halftime. Junior Madison Hobson nearly scored from 25 yards, while senior Chelsea Pettyjohn fired wide and junior Rayiah Davis put a shot directly at Kuchinski.
Point Park threatened late, but Kuchinski denied a close-range attempt by junior Mollie Rebuck. Fernandez sent an attempt over the bar, and sophomore Reese Rizzo had a shot saved for a corner before freshman Kelly Dougherty and junior Ana Davis saw their efforts blocked.
With less than two minutes remaining, Point Park earned a throw-in deep in Frostburg State territory. A scramble in the box allowed Pihlgren to turn and fire from close range for the only goal of the match. Cassidy Paige later sent a volley high as Frostburg State looked for an equalizer.
Frostburg State Women’s Soccer Looks Ahead
Point Park outshot Frostburg State 13-8, while Frostburg State held a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Mia Graff played in goal for Frostburg State.
Frostburg State will remain on the road when it travels to Glenville State on Wednesday, September 23, at 6 p.m.
