A nine-goal finish lifted Johns Hopkins University Men’s Water Polo past George Washington, 13-8, on September 19 in Baltimore. The victory improved Johns Hopkins to 7-3 and snapped George Washington’s four-game winning streak, dropping George Washington to 9-5.
Johns Hopkins also ended a 23-game losing streak against George Washington and earned its first win in the series since November 4, 2016. The Blue Jays had lost to George Washington six days earlier.
Johns Hopkins Builds Momentum After Falling Behind
Johns Hopkins took a 3-1 lead during the opening five minutes and 12 seconds behind goals from Mason Hofmann, Owen Bartlett and Phillip Long. Ben McDade then sparked a seven-goal George Washington run with a goal at the 2:24 mark of the first quarter. McDade and Anthony Ferneini combined for six of George Washington’s seven goals during the surge.
Ferneini’s goal with 4:10 remaining in the second quarter gave George Washington an 8-4 advantage. Max Blecher answered with an even-strength goal, and Hofmann scored twice to bring Johns Hopkins within two goals at halftime.
Long scored 21 seconds into the third quarter to make it an 8-7 game. Luke Mendelsohn tied the contest at eight, and Blake Lowe put Johns Hopkins ahead, 9-8, with 12 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Phillip Long Leads Johns Hopkins With Four Goals
Johns Hopkins extended its lead in the fourth quarter as Ben Lucas and Patrick Rooney scored extra-man goals. Hofmann added a five-meter goal with 2:56 remaining before Long completed the scoring at the 1:43 mark.
Long led Johns Hopkins with a season-high four goals. Hofmann recorded his third hat trick of the season, while Sebastian Isaacs made six saves in the victory.
Johns Hopkins Heads to Bruno Invitational
Johns Hopkins will compete at the Bruno Invitational in Providence, Rhode Island, the following weekend. The Blue Jays are scheduled to face MIT, Harvard and Conn College on Saturday, September 26.
