The Norfolk Tides scheduled Samuel Basallo to begin a Major League Rehab Assignment at Harbor Park on Sunday, August 16, in conjunction with the Baltimore Orioles. Basallo has not played since July 19, three days after the All-Star break.
Samuel Basallo Returns to the Norfolk Tides
Basallo has spent the 2026 season on Baltimore’s roster and has played in 86 games. The catcher is batting .241 with 16 home runs, 46 RBIs and a .755 OPS.
Basallo recently turned 22 on August 13. The assignment brings him back to the Norfolk Tides after he played 76 games with the club in 2025.
Basallo’s 2025 Norfolk Season
Basallo hit .280 for Norfolk in 2025, going 73-for-270 with 49 runs, 17 doubles, 23 home runs, 67 RBIs and 44 walks. His slash line was .377/.589/.966. (Note: This seems to be incorrect. Based on stats, correct slash line is .280/.377/.589 with .966 OPS.)
He tied for eighth in the International League in home runs and ranked ninth in RBIs with 67 through his final game with the Tides on August 15. Basallo also became the first Norfolk catcher since Todd Hundley in 1991 to earn a postseason All-Star selection and the third catcher in franchise history to receive the honor, following John Stearns in 1976.
Baltimore selected Basallo’s contract on August 17, and he made his Major League debut that day at Houston. He played 31 games with the Baltimore Orioles in 2025 and batted .165, going 18-for-109 with six doubles, four home runs and 15 RBIs.
