Coppin State University Women’s Golf Team Opens With 15th-Place Finish as Genesis Lewis Ties for 51st

The Coppin State University women’s golf team opened its program history by finishing 15th at the Elon Women’s Invitational, held at Alamance Country Club in Burlington, North Carolina. The Eagles posted a three-round score of 1,013, with rounds of 334, 339 and 340 on the par-71, 6,225-yard course.

Genesis Lewis led Coppin State with a 235 (+22), tying for 51st individually. Lewis carded rounds of 79, 76 and 80, including the team’s best round of the tournament, a 76 in the second round.

Genesis Lewis Leads the Team

Lewis recorded an eagle on the par-five sixth hole and a birdie on the 10th hole during the opening round. In the second round, she made par on 11 holes and added a birdie on the 13th hole.

Angelique Espinosa finished 71st overall with a 245 (+32), posting rounds of 83, 82 and 80. Her final-round 80 tied Lewis for Coppin State’s lowest score of the day.

Alina Amos finished with a 247 (+34), opening the tournament with Coppin State’s best first-round score of 78 and making two birdies. She followed with rounds of 84 and 85.

Other Team Results

Isabelle Nguyen posted a 288 (+75), while Jordyn Kyle finished with a 297 (+84). The performances accounted for Coppin State’s five-player lineup at the Elon Women’s Invitational.

Elon won the team championship with an 861 (+9), followed by William & Mary with an 882 and Wofford with an 884. Howard finished fourth with an 887, while North Carolina A&T placed sixth with an 890.

The Coppin State University Athletics tournament recap identified the Elon Women’s Invitational as the first tournament in the women’s golf program’s history.

Next Competition Scheduled in Chicago

The Coppin State women’s golf team is scheduled to compete next October 5-6 at Chicago State’s Maurice Allen Intercollegiate Championship. The event is scheduled for George Dunne National Golf Course in Chicago.

Maryland Sports Blog Take

Coppin State University women’s golf team received a team-leading performance from Genesis Lewis in its first tournament. Lewis’s 76 in the second round was the Eagles’ lowest score of the event, while Angelique Espinosa and Alina Amos also posted notable scores in the lineup.

The team will next compete at Chicago State’s Maurice Allen Intercollegiate Championship on Oct. 5-6.
