The 2026 season was defined by learning, adversity and notable individual performances for the Delmarva Shorebirds in the Carolina League. Despite a tough win-loss record, Delmarva produced several standout moments and promoted multiple players during the season.
Junior Aybar Delivered Delmarva’s First Win
The Shorebirds earned their first win of the season April 3 against Salem, rallying for three runs in the ninth inning to secure an 11-10 victory. Junior Aybar hit the go-ahead two-run double and finished with a career-high five RBIs.
Caden Hunter and Christian Rodriguez Led the Pitching Staff
Left-hander Caden Hunter made six appearances for Delmarva, throwing 23 innings with 40 strikeouts, 12 walks and a 1.17 ERA while allowing three earned runs. Hunter won Carolina League Pitcher of the Week honors for May 12-17 after making two starts against the Fayetteville Woodpeckers.
In one of those starts, Hunter allowed one run on one hit over 8.2 innings, striking out 18 batters and walking three. Delmarva promoted Hunter to Frederick on May 26 before moving him to Double-A Chesapeake on July 28, where he finished the season.
Right-hander Christian Rodriguez made his professional debut in 2026 after missing the 2025 season because of open-heart surgery. During his time with Delmarva, Rodriguez led the Carolina League in ERA at 2.94, innings pitched at 94.2 and strikeouts at 100.
Rodriguez shut out the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers on July 11 during an 8-0 Delmarva victory. He allowed five hits, struck out four and walked one before earning a promotion to High-A Frederick on July 28.
DJ Layton and Jaiden Lo Re Produced at the Plate
Shortstop DJ Layton played 95 games for Delmarva before being promoted to Frederick on Aug. 11. He recorded 29 extra-base hits, 45 RBIs, 64 runs scored and 32 stolen bases while posting a team-best .785 OPS.
Layton also led the team with 73 walks and put together a 23-game on-base streak, the longest by a Shorebird since 2021. Jaiden Lo Re joined Delmarva at the start of June after playing in the Florida Complex League and hit .361 in his first month with the team.
Lo Re homered in his third game with Delmarva in Augusta on June 5 and won the Orioles’ Minor League Player of the Month award for June. He finished among the Carolina League’s top five in hits with 66 and batting average at .325 during his time with Delmarva before being promoted to Frederick on Aug. 26.
Stiven Martinez and Eric Booth Jr. Added Power
Outfielder Stiven Martinez led Delmarva with 102 games played, 14 home runs and 58 RBIs. He hit .280 with five home runs, 19 RBIs and 16 walks in August, and recorded his first career multi-homer game May 12 in a 7-2 win over the Fayetteville Woodpeckers.
Eric Booth Jr., the No. 7 overall pick in the 2026 draft, made his Delmarva debut Aug. 11. Booth recorded his first career hit and RBI in his second at-bat during a 3-2 walk-off win over the Salem RidgeYaks, which was Delmarva’s lone walk-off victory of the season.
Booth finished the season on an eight-game hitting streak and recorded four multi-hit games. He also posted his first career three-hit performance Sept. 5 against Kannapolis.
Delmarva Shorebirds Set 2027 Opening Date
The 2026 season gave the Delmarva Shorebirds several individual development stories despite the team’s difficult win-loss record. Hunter, Rodriguez, Layton, Lo Re, Martinez and Booth each produced statistics, milestones or promotions that stood out during the season.
Delmarva is scheduled to open the 2027 season Friday, April 2, by hosting the Fredericksburg Nationals. The season will be the 31st season of Delmarva Shorebirds baseball.
