Frostburg State University Athletics’ Frostburg State Football defeated Assumption 24-19 in its home opener on September 12, 2026, in Frostburg, Maryland. KJ Smothers rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns, while Ray Adames scored on a 77-yard reception from Jordan Brooks.
Frostburg State Football Rallies After Halftime
Frostburg State led 3-0 after the first quarter but trailed 13-3 at halftime. The Bobcats responded with 14 points in the third quarter to take a 17-13 lead into the final period.
Smothers scored on a 4-yard run in the third quarter before Brooks connected with Adames for the 77-yard touchdown that put Frostburg State ahead. Smothers added his second rushing touchdown from 1 yard in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 24-13.
Smothers and Adames Power the Offense
Brooks completed 14 of 20 passes for 212 yards and one touchdown. Adames recorded more than 100 receiving yards for the second consecutive game and scored his third touchdown of the season.
Assumption trimmed the deficit to 24-19 on a 1-yard touchdown run, but Frostburg State held the lead. The Bobcats forced a turnover on downs on Assumption’s final possession to secure the five-point victory.
Carter Mazalewski led Frostburg State with six tackles. Frostburg State improved to 1-1, while Assumption fell to 0-2.
Frostburg State Opens Mountain East Conference Play at West Liberty
Frostburg State will open Mountain East Conference play at West Liberty on September 19, 2026, at 1 p.m. The Bobcats will then host West Virginia Wesleyan on September 26 at 1 p.m.
