Third-ranked Salisbury University women’s field hockey scored twice in the first quarter and defeated Washington College 2-0 on Wednesday at Sea Gull Stadium in Salisbury, Md. The victory improved the Sea Gulls to 2-0, while the Shorewomen fell to 1-2.
Dakotah Trader opened the scoring in the fifth minute on an assist from Alex Kupper. Layla Kent added a goal in the 12th minute, giving Salisbury University a two-goal lead before the end of the opening period.
Salisbury University Builds Early Lead
Trader’s goal was her first in a Salisbury University uniform, while Kupper recorded her first assist of the year. Kent scored her second goal of the season on six shots, including five shots on target.
Salisbury University led Washington College 15-0 in shots at halftime. The Sea Gulls finished with a 23-3 advantage in shots and won the penalty-corner battle 8-3.
Maddie Castaneda Preserves Salisbury University Shutout
Washington College recorded three shots and one shot on goal in the second half. Maddie Castaneda made one save over 60 minutes for Salisbury University and secured the shutout.
The victory marked Salisbury University’s second shutout of the season.

Salisbury University will continue its three-game homestand against ninth-ranked Messiah University on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 6 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium.
