Howard Community College women’s soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a 5-2 victory over Prince George’s Community College on Aug. 28 in Columbia, Maryland. The Dragons ended an 18-game losing streak, not having won since Sept. 7, 2024.
Gabriela Rodriguez, a forward, scored two goals and assisted once for Howard Community College. Midfielder Maeve Daly contributed one goal and two assists as the Dragons held a 2-1 lead at halftime before extending their advantage with three second-half goals.
Howard Community College Women’s Soccer Takes Early Lead
Rodriguez opened the scoring in the 21st minute after connecting on a pass from midfielder Ashly Dominguez. Defender Caly Smithson then scored on a free kick near midfield, giving Howard a 2-0 lead.
Prince George’s Community College responded with a goal from Brooke Mitchell in the final seconds of the first half. The teams went into halftime with Howard Community College ahead 2-1.
Rodriguez and Daly Extend the Dragons’ Lead
Rodriguez scored off a pass from Daly in the 58th minute to make it 3-1. One minute later, Daly scored from a Rodriguez assist, pushing the Dragons’ advantage to 4-1.
Mitchell scored her second goal on a penalty kick in the 65th minute. Prince George’s Community College out-shot Howard 13-6 in the second half, and both teams played down one player after a pair of red cards.
Midfielder Melody Scott completed the scoring in the 77th minute with a goal assisted by Daly. Goalkeeper Sophia Newman made 15 saves for Howard Community College.
Howard Community College Women’s Soccer Records Seven Shots on Goal
Rodriguez finished with five shots, including three on goal, with two goals and one assist. Daly recorded two shots, one goal and two assists, while Dominguez added three shots and one assist.
Prince George’s Community College finished with 17 shots on goal, compared with seven for Howard Community College. The Dragons next face Garrett College on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 3 p.m.
