Southern Maryland Blue Crabs’ Connor Overton Earns Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week Honors

Southern Maryland Blue Crabs’ Connor Overton earned Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week honors after winning both of his starts against the Lexington Legends during the week of August 11-16. Overton allowed one earned run over 10 2/3 innings, gave up six hits and struck out nine batters.

Overton made his first start Tuesday, Aug. 11, working 5 2/3 innings in the Blue Crabs’ 8-5 victory over the Lexington Legends. He allowed three runs, one earned, and retired nine consecutive batters between the second and fifth innings.

Connor Overton Completes Five Scoreless Innings

Overton returned to the mound Saturday, Aug. 15, in the first game of a doubleheader. He completed five scoreless innings, allowed two hits and struck out four batters as the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs defeated the Lexington Legends 5-0.

Overton and relief pitcher Jordan Carr combined for the shutout, marking Southern Maryland’s second shutout victory of the season. The two wins against Lexington accounted for all of Overton’s victories during the award week.

Overton’s Atlantic League Season Context

Through 17 starts, Overton held a 6-6 record with a 5.26 ERA. He ranked second in the Atlantic League with 2.33 walks allowed per nine innings and a 3.96 strikeout-to-walk ratio, trailing only teammate Ian Kahaloa.

Overton also ranked fourth among qualified pitchers with a 1.28 WHIP. He became the second Southern Maryland pitcher and third Southern Maryland player to earn a weekly award this season, joining relief pitcher Isaac Fix and outfielder Danny Bautista Jr.

Overton was in his 12th professional season and his second with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. The Mechanicsville, Virginia, native pitched three Major League Baseball seasons with Toronto, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati before being selected by Miami in the 15th round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Old Dominion University.

Overton also previously played in the Atlantic League with Lancaster in 2019.

Connor Overton’s award followed a productive two-start stretch against Lexington. His one earned run allowed over 10 2/3 innings, along with six hits allowed and nine strikeouts, made him the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs’ weekly award winner in the Atlantic League.
