The Frederick Keys defeated the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Rays) 3-1 Tuesday at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, Maryland, earning their seventh straight win in the first game between the teams. Frederick led throughout the game, which extended its South Atlantic League North division lead to half a game.
Frederick Keys Take Early Lead
Boston Bateman made his 17th start of the season and pitched three scoreless innings, striking out three batters. Bradley Brehmer followed with a scoreless fourth inning in relief before Christian Rodriguez took over.
DJ Layton gave the Frederick Keys a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in his first at-bat with the team. Bowling Green pitcher Blake Morgan retired eight straight batters after the home run and threw a 1-2-3 second inning.
Leandro Arias added an RBI double in the fourth inning, driving in Vance Honeycutt to extend the lead to 2-0. Braylin Tavera entered the game for Honeycutt and doubled to lead off the sixth inning; Arias followed with an RBI single that gave Frederick a 3-0 advantage.
Christian Rodriguez Works Into Ninth Inning
Rodriguez allowed only one hit through his first four innings and pitched into the ninth. Ryan Cermek doubled to lead off the inning, and Narciso Polanco singled him home for Bowling Green’s only run.
Rodriguez struck out Ryan McCoy for the first out before Noah Myers flew out to deep left field. Nicandro Aybar then bounced out to second base, where Edwin Amparo secured the final out and preserved the Frederick Keys’ 3-1 victory.
Frederick Keys Scheduled to Meet Bowling Green Wednesday
The Frederick Keys and Bowling Green Hot Rods (Rays) were scheduled to meet again Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. The game is part of the six-game series.
Wednesday’s game was scheduled as Wag Wednesday, presented by Mobile Vet Surgery, along with Guaranteed Win Wednesday, courtesy of Musket Ridge Golf Course.
