The Delmarva Shorebirds lost 10-8 to the Fredericksburg Nationals on Tuesday in Fredericksburg, Virginia, despite Jordan Sanchez hitting a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. Sanchez’s early blast gave Delmarva a 3-0 lead, but the Nationals responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning and held on for the victory.
The loss dropped the Shorebirds to 36-67 overall and 13-24 in the relevant split. The Fredericksburg Nationals improved to 63-39 overall and 17-19 in the split.
Fredericksburg Erases Delmarva’s Early Lead
The Nationals scored six runs in the bottom of the first on just two hits and six walks. Two of those walks came with the bases loaded, while Dashyll Tejeda and Luke Dickerson each delivered two-run base hits. This six-run first inning gave Fredericksburg a 6-3 lead after one inning. Delmarva pitching issued 11 walks in the game, and eight of those free passes eventually scored.
Shorebirds’ Home Runs Keep Game Close
Andrew Tess pulled Delmarva within one run in the fourth inning with a two-run home run, his first Single-A homer, cutting the deficit to 6-5. Coy James responded with a two-run home run for the Nationals, extending their lead again. James added an RBI double in the sixth inning, pushing the Fredericksburg lead to 9-5.
Stiven Martinez followed with a solo home run for Delmarva, narrowing the margin to three runs again. In the seventh inning, Jaiden Lo Re scored on a passed ball to bring the Shorebirds within two at 9-7. Manuel Cabrera then hit an RBI single for Fredericksburg, restoring a three-run lead.
Martinez scored again in the eighth inning on a throwing error during a double-steal attempt, bringing Delmarva within two runs, but the Shorebirds could not complete the comeback in the 10-8 loss.
Delmarva Shorebirds Set for Wednesday Rematch
Noah Millikan earned the win for the Fredericksburg Nationals, while Esteban Mejia took the loss for Delmarva. L.J. Waco was awarded the save. The Shorebirds were scheduled to face Fredericksburg again on Wednesday, with Andrew Herbert slated as Delmarva’s starting pitcher against Landon Harmon. First pitch was scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
