Daffer’s 54 yard field goal sinks Navy 38-35

Navy and East Carolina traded blows for 60 minutes yesterday and it came down to the last play. Freshman Maquel Haywood returned a kickoff 96 yards to give Navy a 35-27 lead with 8:33 left. It look ECU three minutes to answer when Holton Ahlers hit Tyler Snead for a 28 yard touchdown. A two point conversion tied it at 35. Ahlers finished 27-32 for 405 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also had 7 rushes for 48 yards including a couple key runs to keep drives alive. Snead had 5 catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns. His 46 yard reception set up the game winning field goal.

After a delay of game penalty moved ECU back 5 yards and Navy called two timeouts to “freeze” him freshman Owen Daffer nailed a 54 yard field goal as time expired to give the Pirates their 7th win and continue a tough season for Navy.

On his senior day slotback Carlinos Acie had 6 rushes for 155 yards and a 90 yard touchdown run for the Midshipmen. Quarterback Tai Lavatai added 23 rushes for 54 yards and was 4 of 4 passing for 37 yards and 2 touchdowns. Next week Navy heads to Philadelphia to play Temple. Kickoff is at noon on ESPNU. The Owls are 3-8 and lost 44-10 to Tulsa yesterday.
