The Washington Capitals’ prospect depth has taken yet another blow this weekend, as Alexander Alexeyev, the 2018 first round pick, has reportedly suffered a serious knee injury in last night’s game.
The Red Deer Rebel defenseman, who despite an injury-riddled campaign managed to put up 43 points in 49 games, got injured after a knee-on-knee collision in a game versus the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League.
Alexeyev’s 2018-19 season has seen him rocket up the Capital’s prospect pool, seemingly surpassing 2016 first rounder Lucas Johansen has the top defensive prospect for Washington.

The video above seems to show the knee-on-knee collision, but the Red Deer organization has yet to release details of Alexeyev’s injury. Most likely, his injury would be a ligament injury in his left knee, but given the ambiguous response, it could be anything.
Regardless, it seems that Alexeyev, who signed a three-year entry level contract with the Capitals this summer, might be done for the season. After a promising debut season, all eyes will be on Alexeyev as he rehabs from this injury.
